Gluten Free Foods

Hi!

Do central Chicago supermarkets sell gluten free or celiac products? Things like bakery products, bread, cookies, candies. Is there a special section in the supermarkets and are products labelled as suitable for celiacs?

Is cider available in most bars?

Many thanks in advance!

Gluten Free Foods

The CHicago Diner on halsted is a vege/gluten free restaurant. (Not everything is Gluten free but there are options on the menu).

I don%26#39;t think Cider is all that readily available in bars. It%26#39;s not a real popular drink here. Maybe in the english pubs it is like the Red Lion. But you can order bottled water, soda or different juices.

If you are referring to the Red Lion Pub in Lincoln Park, sadly it is no longer open.

If you are talking about hard ciders, almost all bars have a couple options, with Magner%26#39;s and Woodchuck being quite common.

I can%26#39;t think of a bar I%26#39;ve been to where someone asked for (hard) cider and they didn%26#39;t sell at least one variety. Certainly haven%26#39;t checked everywhere, but it%26#39;s widely-enough sold I%26#39;d say.

Here%26#39;s a link to a list of gluten-free stores around Chicago (note that most are in the suburbs):

oh hard cider? But it%26#39;s not gluten free since it is usually made with barley...

I%26#39;m not sure what hard cider is - but in the UK,cider is gluten free. Magners is included in this so I think I%26#39;m looking for cider made with a similar recipe!!

Hard cider means that it contains alcohol.

Woodchuck is made in the traditional European way and is Gluten free, but as mentioned Magner%26#39;s is available at many, many bars as well.

Most ciders are sold by the bottle and not on tap, so you can easily ask the bartender to check the label to confirm that it is Gluten free.

Some places will have cider! Most Irish pubs would probably have Magner, is that ok for celiacs!? I%26#39;m pretty sure Gingers Ale House at 3801 N. Ashland Ave. serves Magner...

Karyn%26#39;s Cooked has a lot of gluten free dinner options! And most of the Whole Foods have a lot of gluten free treats, cupcakes, etc. Swirlz cupcakes makes some pretty great gluten free treats! People at Whole Foods are generally pretty helpful, seriously, just ask someone and they will happily steer you in the right direction.
