Students Travelling Chicago to Orlando

After spending time at Hope University Michigan my daughter and five friends would like to travel to Orlando. They have to return to Chicago to fly back to the U.k.Could any one advise us as to which would be the best way to do it bearing in mind they are on a tight budget! Is there a good company to check for internal flights? How about trains? Many thanks.

There are a lot of flights between Orlando and Chicago. The US isn%26#39;t like the UK in that ';internal'; flights are scarce or costly - with our distances, air is the normal way to get around. You would probably find that a train is not much cheaper and takes much longer.

To get the lowest cost flights, you may need to travel at odd hours. I was looking at Chicago-Miami flights a few months ago and was enticed by $200-ish fares, though they would have required a 6am departure. A later-morning departure was $400.

Suggest doing a fare search on Orbitz, Travelocity, or any of the online travel websites.

Chicago has two airports - Midway (MDW) and O%26#39;hare (ORD). Be sure to check the Orlando fares out of both airports. The are about equal distance to downtown and are accessible via train. Try www.kayak.com

Make sure to check flights on Southwest Airlines,

www.southwest.com/

which flies out of Midway. I don%26#39;t think they appear on Kayak. You can save some money by flying mid-week, if that is an option.

If they%26#39;re planning to fly to Chicago and immediately back to the UK, you don%26#39;t want to fly to Midway - the UK flights will undoubtedly be at O%26#39;Hare, and getting between the two airports is a bit of an ordeal.

But if they%26#39;re going to spend some time in Chicago and fly to the UK another day, Midway is fine and it%26#39;s worth checking out Southwest.

Depending on the time of year and the age of the drivers, driving a one-way rental car back from Florida can be very cheap. In spring, I%26#39;ve seen offers under $20 a day. They would have to find inexpensive one-way flights to Orlando, but those aren%26#39;t too hard if you look apart from major holidays.

I believe you%26#39;re referring to Hope College in Holland, MI. If that%26#39;s the case and if they are driving into Chicago from there, I have an idea that would require planning but would be cost effective. Check out http://www.allegiantair.com/ They fly round trip from several area airports, to Orlando Stanford pretty cheap. I see many under $200. Two airports I%26#39;d suggest that are much closer to Hope are Grand Rapids MI GRR about a half hour from Hope. Also South Bend IN SBN just a bit over an hour from Hope. South Bend makes sense as on their return they could catch the Southshore http://www.nictd.com/ which is a commuter train into Chicago ending at Millenium Station, about a two hour ride and costing about $10. Someone here could give walking directions from Millenium station to the blueline train to O%26#39;hare.

Oh I attended Hope so if you have any questions about it or Holland, MI let me know.
