solo bus travel

I haven%26#39;t taken a bus in many years and wonder if it would be safe for a woman over 65 traveling alone to ride overnight from Wisconsin to Kentucky, changing buses late in Chicago. Not only would it be cheaper than renting a car, it seems that it would allow me to sleep instead of drive (Assuming I can on a bus full of people.) I%26#39;d like some coments before even raising the subject with my husband. Thanks.

solo bus travel

I have to tell ya, my Nana, she is 84, travels alone by bus regularly and has for the past 20 years. She usually starts in Chicago, so a little bit different, and heads to either Atlanta or Las Vegas. She drives and is able, but she doesn%26#39;t drive expressways AT ALL, so this has always been a good option for her. She also is a regular Amtrak traveler. Have you considered Amtrak? Not sure if the Amtrak is easily accessible to you or what your final destination is, but it%26#39;s worth considering. I know my Nana prefers train travel to bus travel, but financially bus travel often wins out.

Not in a million years would I let my Nana ride a long way bus. Those long bus rides have terrible bathrooms and the riff raff that are on busses in the states is no joke. Maybe Amtrak because she could get up and walk around, but flying is so cheap, like on southwest, why consider anything else unless you have a fear of flying.

Um... clearly you don%26#39;t know MY Nana...You tell a woman who came over from Norway..widowed, with her 8 kids in tow... what to do...or God forbid ';not let her';... good luck with that, lol. ;) It so very much depends on individual ';street smarts'; and awareness, etc... I see nothing wrong with bus travel, etc. if you%26#39;re comfortable, alert, aware, etc.

No, I don%26#39;t know YOUR Nana nor did I comment on her. But, we are careful with OUR Nana and don%26#39;t let her go to smelly places. We don%26#39;t want to see her final years of life spent on smelly busses. Anyway, she wouldn%26#39;t want to be on a smelly bus with riff raff rag-a-muffin types that are often on the bus. She likes clean, respectable modes of transport.

My apologies...but it seemed a bit weird for you to use Nana as well and implying that perhaps you treat your Nana better, etc. I assumed I read it exactly how you intended for me to, but perhaps one shouldn%26#39;t assume... My grandmother is a bit of a rugged woman who travels all over the country and loves her independence.... and I plan to be the same way in my 80s.

and Donniejc, this thread is about you, LOL!! don%26#39;t be discouraged, it%26#39;s common knowledge that bus travel isn%26#39;t the most glamorous these days, but I%26#39;m going to assume that you%26#39;re a very intelligent woman who%26#39;s very aware,etc... it goes without saying that the bathrooms will be a little iffy, the crowd may be a little rough...I wonder though if you wouldn%26#39;t want to bus from Wisconsin to Union Station in Chicago to Amtrak to KY if where you%26#39;re going has a Amtrak stop.
