looking to travel route 66 in july. probably have 6 weeks...but trying to source car rental or motorhomerental. Motorhomes are turning out to be expensive as they dont include unlimited milage. is that standard?? also was hoping to pick up and drop off at different locations which is also increasing the price. Can anyone give me some info on this subject?? would really appreciate it,

With a one-way rental, you can expect to pay a surcharge. www.kayak.com and www.bnm.com are good sites for car rental rates.

No direct RV experience but I see a lot of these on the road:

Hey DD,
I did the trip once with a rented RV. Here%26#39;s the thing which you probably know. Distances in this country are BIG. The RV got 8 to 10 miles per gallon. It had huge problems going as fast as I like to go. It would not go up mountains well or down mountains well. The west has mountains. The overnight fees were high. When all was said and done, after three weeks I turned the thing in , got a rental car, stayed at low cost motels which are everywhere in the USA, and could go fast, go off the beaten path. The cost of renting the thing was enormous, and that was when gas was cheap.
Having said that, it was an adventure, it had a passable kitchen, met some nice folks, learned what hot really meant when the air conditioner broke!
