Mother and 16 year old daughter visiting for her birthday.

I am planning a trip to Chicago to surprise my daughter for her 16th birthday at the end of May. She loves museums, art, anime and theater shows. Could someone advise me as to the best location we should stay for sightseeing, all the above and safety? Any hotel advice?

Kentucky- How fun! You and your daughter will have a blast. I would recommend staying in the Theatre district. Some of the hotels in the theatre district would be Hotel Allegro, Hotel Burnham, and Hotel Monaco. These are also closer to the museums (Art Institute, the Planitarium and Museum of Science and Indsutry are alittle bit further south). Alot of these hotels also have ';Theater Packages'; which might be worth looking into. If you are looking to do some shopping you can just walk a couple blocks north over the river and you will be on Michigan Avenue. As for Safety, downtown Chicago in general is extremely safe. Especially in the theatre district and the Mag mile. Of course like anywhere use caution. Enjoy Chicago, in the summer it%26#39;s one of the most beautiful cities in the world!

Thanks for the information Chicagogirl however the hotels you mentioned are out of my price range. I would like to find something a little more affordable so I can spend more money sightseeing, shopping, eating and taking in a show or 2. We probably won%26#39;t be in the room much but just to clean up and sleep. Only planning to be there for 3 nights. Any other hotel suggestions around the $150 per night price range?

For cheaper hotels considering looking at Priceline or Hotwire, they are both non refundable and non cancellable however. Priceline is blind bidding (don%26#39;t know what hotel until you place your bid or how much to bid), Hotwire is also blind but they tell you how much. www.betterbidding.com and www.biddingfortravel.com are good resources for those two websites.

The other thing you might keep an eye on is travelzoo.com, they frequently have rates around $100 per night for very nice hotels. I just looked for a friend for late May and the deals don%26#39;t go quite that far yet but they should soon.

Hottix.org is a good resource for last minute theater tickets, you might find in the current economy that there are a lot of empty seats at theaters at 1/2 price.

The Burnham is showing a rate of $99 for certain days in May, check here for the blackout dates. That is a very nice hotel in a good location for the Art Institute and Millennium Park and some of the outdoor art, you could treat your daughter to a nice lunch at the lovely Atwood Cafe at the Burnham.

Since she enjoys art, you might want to include a visit to some of the outdoor sculptures in the itinerary, there is a Picasso at Daley Center, a Miro across the street, a Chagall a couple of blocks away and a Calder nearby. And don%26#39;t forget the Tiffany domes at the Cultural Center and the Tiffany mosaic at the Macy%26#39;s on State.

MyFreebird - I agree with LoveChicago. You can find some really great rates for those hotels on expedia etc. But if you are still looking for more affordable there is nice Courtyard Marriott in the River North Area. River North is good too, in between the Theater District and the Mag Mile. You would still be able to walk to shopping and museums.

I am taking my 13 year old daughter, with some friends, to Chicago at the end of May too. WE are going to see Legally Blonde the Musical at the Ford theatre. that would be the perfect play for you two. It is very fun, catchy music, lots of pink, and its not R-rated...have a great time! (tickets are already on sale at ticketmaster, this show is there the 2nd half of May).

The new Mary Poppins Musical will also be playing downtown during that time frame,

and although some of the language is a bit stronger at times Jersey Boys is a fabulous show, with great music, and really, what 16 yr old hasn%26#39;t heard all those words, anyway?

It%26#39;s also a sell-out in NY, but here in Chicago, there are some discount seats available right now each day...for that days performances at $25 ea.

To take a look at some of the shows in town (and to get some of them at discount prices), try http://www.hottix.org/

Could someone advise me on Club Quarters at Michigan? I%26#39;m trying to find a reasonably priced hotel for my daughter and I at the end of May. Safety and good location to many attractions are key.

Great location, smallish rooms. Ask for a river view. You%26#39;ll be able to walk to all kinds of things. If you are on a budget. look for some of the free shows at the Cultural Center, library, architecture foundation, etc. Art galleries are also free. Take the Blue Line to Wicker Park and Bucktown for offbeat shopping, galleries and restaurants.
