Best way to get to Science & Industy from Milwauke- no car

My 17 year old daughter and her boyfriend want to go to the Museum of Science %26amp; Industry this week. They do not want to drive, they would be coming from Milwaukee area.

What is a better option Amtrack or bus? The train station appears to be about 2 miles? Don%26#39;t know if this is doable on foot or do they need to catch a city bus.

These are both non city kids but between the two of them they do have a brain.

Does this seem like a relativly safe and doable plan for them?

Amtrak from MKE to Chicago, then a bus to the Museum of Science %26amp; Industry in Hyde Park. The walk from Union Station to the Museum is about 5 miles in length, through parts of the city I don%26#39;t recommend passing on foot. The Museum location is a good one and I don%26#39;t think you need worry about their safety when there. Have a look at the www.transitchicago.com website for public transportation information.

Does any one have information on them taking the mega bus? I don%26#39;t know how much cheaper it would be. The Amtrack is $44.00 each. It looks like the Meag bus comes into the Amrtack station??

They both arrive in the same area (I think MegaBus now stops a block south of Union Station.) There are a couple of bus lines from Union Station to Hyde Park, but the express bus only runs during rush hours. It%26#39;s much farther than 2 miles (more like 7 miles)from the train station to the MSI - you must be looking at the wrong museum. Check the MSI website for transportation options.

There is also a train from Kenosha to the Ogilvie Station downtown for $7 each way. Ogilvie is a couple of blocks north of Union Station.

Check in the Milwaukee forum for a recent post regarding MegaBus to and from Chicago. In summary, I would recommend it if they left on one of the first buses out of MKE. The later buses tend to have issues in regards to being on time. Otherwise, Amtrak really is the easiest, albeit more expensive compared to the bus. Greyhound is an option, so I would check their website for schedules. Amtrak and MegaBus from Milwaukee arrive in Chicago at Union Station, I%26#39;m not sure about Greyhound. As far as the Chicago portion, I%26#39;d stick to the advice of the posters in this forum, as I%26#39;m not as familiar with public transportation in Chicago.

If they%26#39;re going to MSI on a weekday, they can walk from the Union Station/Ogilvie Station area east to State Street. On State Street, they can catch the Number 6 bus southbound. It will head through The Loop, then to Lake Shore Drive and through the Hyde Park and Jackson Park neighborhoods. They can exit at Hyde Park Blvd and 57th Street across from the museum. The stops are announced and displayed above the windshield.

On the return trip, they can catch the northbound bus on the opposite corner.

If they%26#39;re going on a weekend, they can catch the Number 10 bus on State Street. it ends at the north entrance of the museum. The fare is $2.25 cash or if they walk down into the subway, they can puy $4 in the farecard machine, buy a card and save $.50.

There aren%26#39;t many trains from Kenosha - check metrarail.com for the schedule. The Megabus stop was moved south of Union Station as it doesn%26#39;t have any affiliation with Amtrak. The Greyhound station is a few block south of Union Station. Take the train and then follow the bus recommendation as listed above. Fastest, most convenient, and completely doable for two kids with brains.

AMTRAK is best. It%26#39;s a little more expensive, but it%26#39;s reliable, safe, and somewhat classy. Plus they get to use the Union Station.

MEGABUS is cheaper, less reliable (later departures may be late), and can be a problem.

I have taken both modes Milw %26lt;==%26gt;Chi, and I kind of like Megabus (once I learned how it worked). Mostly young people, who are cool and very adaptable.

Forget Greyhound - the station is the pits, and although it only 4 blocks from Union Station, it%26#39;s in a somewhat bad area.
